Project Overview
Block Shop is a puzzle game where space, pacing and creativity are everything. While each machine requires a tile, some require specific layouts or can do the role of 2 to 3 machines at the same time, leading to a significant amount of care and deep understanding of the game mechanics to ensure puzzles are actually engaging and teach the concept we need to teach.
Block Shop features 108 levels split into 12 chapters, each adding something new to the game. The main challenge was making the initial levels a puzzle that is rewarding to solve while also forcing the player to learn and engage in the mechanics in as blunt of a way as possible.
My addition to the project saw that not only did we have the base machines to teach, but many level design concepts to showcase from giving the player a maze of locked machines, movable exporters, suberting expectations and creating locks that require sacrifices. Block Shop was a nest of creativity for my mechanic-focused expertise.
My role in the project
My role on Block Shop as a Level Designer involved me in the creation of hundreds of levels, including most of the ones found in-game and as many that didn’t make the cut. I was also tasked with overseeing the game pacing, flow and chapter order. This included full visual boards and presentations to ensure coordination.
Steam and video reviews frequently comment on the quality of the level design!
